New Republicans read Constitution in Congress

As the 112th Congress takes office, a large number of Republicans are filling seats formerly occupied by Democrats. In attempt to remind themselves of the nation’s original principles, Republicans decided to read the Constitution as their first majority decision.

This was the first time in the nation’s history that the document was fully read on the house floor. Democrats and Republicans both took part in the event, each reading small parts.

While historic and moving, this action raises several questions. Will our congressmen revert to these original principles? Will the original principles and values of our founding fathers be awakened? These questions cannot yet be answered.

However, it could be that these principles and values never left. Maybe they have just built a foundation of the principles and values of today. Like the Constitution was a foundation for this nation, its principles are a foundation for the principles of today.

As our congressmen read this fine document it leaves one to ponder. Do they understand its meaning? It’s safe to say the values and principles of today have strayed off course of those of Washington, Jefferson, Adams, and the rest. Yet one thing has remained constant.

We as American citizens, and our congressmen as lawmakers, have never strayed from pursuing justice, freedom, and equality. If these values are the original principles of our nation then maybe we aren’t that far off. Perhaps if Republicans and Democrats can put aside re-elections, party loyalty, and egocentricity they could revert back to what really matters: the nation’s original principles of making laws for the better good of the American people and not just themselves and their careers.

Our nation has not strayed far from its original principles. It has only let greed, corruption, egos, re-elections, and party based politics cloud these original values. A bipartisan effort of both parties could remedy the situation.
The reading of the Constitution was a good start but it is far from a solution. If those who decided to organize this event decide to heed their own advice, this nation may see a great change for the better. However, this vision looks bleak and this reading was most likely adding insult to injury as Republicans try to live up to the promises that got them elected.
